Unifont on Plan 9 Jan. 31, 2025
The free and complete bitmap font, now also on Plan 9.
Poster ¶
Why? ¶
Most of the built-in fonts in Plan 9 are non-free[1][2], and support to non-latin languages is somewhat poor.
To reach higher level of freedom in Plan 9, we need a free yet complete font.
As there’s already Unifont, we can simply use it!
We just need to convert it to Plan 9 bitmap font format.
Footnotes ¶
[1] Yes, they are still non-free after Plan 9 being re-licensed under MIT/Expat.
[2] This license notice is from Plan 9 from Userspace (a.k.a. plan9port), nevertheless the conditions also apply to fonts in Plan 9 OS.
Get Started ¶
You can fetch the generated font at pf2to9/releases.
Also see pf2to9 to generate more fonts for Plan 9.
Notes ¶
You should be able to make your own way installing the font 😉
The Unifont is not really “complete” as it constantly evolves. At the moment writing (Dec. 2025), the newest v17 (in contrast to v16 at Jan. 2025) have many new glyphs added.
