Dec. 5

Made a website for Aww’s Chinese Cursive Script Tutorial. Here’s the site and the proposal (both are in Chinese).

I’d like to write cursive script so that other people can’t read it I write faster and cooler.

It was too difficult to learn, until I see a detailed guide like this.

Tried to enhance CJK text layout for Xonotic, especially long paragraphs like the Guide.

The code is working well and is waiting to be tested and merged. Here’s the GitLab merge request.

Though, Chinese translation of the Guide is not yet finished. It’s so much text!

Gave a few tips to the Learn WebGPU Guide for upgrading to latest wgpu (v24 for that moment). Here’s the GitHub issue.

WebGPU constantly evolves though, expect it to outdate too.

I really wish I can have my own game engine.

Overall

Fixed many Windows Unicode problems for Darkplaces.

I struggled with Windows & Unicode problems back to 2021 for certain other programs. I can’t escape from it even now.

I wanted to localize Unvanquished to variants of Chinese, but found its language implementation only allows selecting only one locale, like only en but not en_US or en_GB.

I have fixed it in this pull request. It is merged and is working.

Unvanquished (and Dæmon Engine) still need to be tweaked for finding the best language match in initial run. Unfortunately I didn’t find related code, and didn’t continue working on it.

Btw, Unvanquished uses some custom config files for weapons etc., which prevents them from being translated in the usual way. In theory I can provide a “extended translation pack” as I did, but it’s too much burden.

Feb. 9

Enhanced localization support and integration for Xonotic SMB Mod, which I use for my community server.

The pull request is issued, but not yet merged due to lacking of active review.

Jan. 4

Fixed a font rendering problem in Darkplaces: rendering CJK strings is painfully slow and memory consuming.

The pull request is merged, after 2 years o’ work and review with several trials. Finally!

Now we are waiting Xonotic 0.9 to release to make it in game.

I’ve finished Chinese translation for Xonotic, and made a repository.

All Chinese variations are converted from “OpenCC standard,” ensuring productivity, consistency and correctness.

NOTE from 2025: the repo is going to be moved to Codeberg, after a pending major update.

Feb. 5

I had issued a fix to make Darkplaces (hence Xonotic) to be able to bind non-ASCII keys for controls.

Now that people with non-ascii keyboard layouts (like Cyrillic, Hebrew, and more) can play the game and chat, without switching keyboard layout.

Plus, IME (CJK language) users are now able to input multiple characters correctly.

The pull request is merged. Yeah!

I’m seeking for more Xonotic maps to play, and encountered this: https://xonotic.fps.gratis/

(Note: it loads a lot of data)

I have a better site layout in my mind, so I made this: https://xmaps.unseen-site.fun/

Not only it’s cool, but also loads much less data than the original site.

Despite that, map downloads are redirected to upstream, as I don’t have TBs of server storage. The service is on GitHub pages.

The GitHub repo is here.

The map database is almost not updated, particularly because of almost no new community maps.

And the code is awful, don’t look at it.
